About the series

This three-dimensional work draws inspiration from several sources: Zeno’s paradox of the flying arrow, which, at every instant, is at rest; the Zen Buddhist anecdote of "Sanpei Opening His Chest"; and an episode involving the sculptor Denchū Hirakushi and Okakura Tenshin, concerning Hirakushi’s work Katsujinsen (“The Life-Giving Arrow”). In the piece, the motion of a second hand is blocked by an iron pipe, against which it strikes again and again. Perhaps one day, when the iron pipe has rusted and crumbled away, the second hand will finally begin to turn again.
