Description

This work features a compass needle―an object that only serves its purpose when it comes to a rest―surrounded by coils of copper wire. Migratory birds are believed to navigate by sensing the Earth’s magnetic field―a faculty known as "magnetoreception"―and some theories suggest that humans, too, may possess this sense. About 200 years ago, Oersted’s experiment―which revealed that an electric current could cause a compass needle to move―led to the discovery of electromagnetic interaction. This enabled humanity to harness and control electrical power; yet, our subsequent, excessive reliance on this energy may have caused us to lose sight of the Earth’s natural magnetic field and the true direction we ought to be heading―perhaps leading us toward a collective "stranding."
