Description
During a visit to my hometown in Wakayama, I revisited the "Burakuri-cho Shopping District"—a place once said to be as bustling as the vibrant Minami district in Osaka.
Located in the heart of Wakayama City—not far from Wakayama Castle and the Prefectural Museum of Art—the area has since transformed into a quintessential "shutter street" (a commercial district defined by rows of closed storefronts).
Confronted by the blank, shuttered facades, I felt a compelling urge to create a work centered on this phenomenon—a type of urban decay that continues to proliferate across regional cities throughout Japan.
Having previously worked in video, I am well-acquainted with the term "shutter." I was also aware that the video artist Takahiko Iimura had created a piece titled Shutter.
I chose this title by conceptualizing the shutters as eyelids—evoking a gaze that stems from "closed eyes," representing an intentional refusal to see, an inability to see, or a state of sightlessness.
Furthermore, reflecting on the ultimate trajectory of these "shutter streets"—and the market forces that brought them into being—as well as the nature of artists who merely chase market trends, I placed unfertilized eggs (eggs that will never hatch) inside a box formed by a partially open shutter.
In the poultry industry, chickens raised for meat are known as "broilers," while those raised for egg production are called "layers."
