About the series
The term ichiju-issai (one soup, one dish) originated in Zen Buddhist temples during the Kamakura period.
While its specific composition has varied over time, it generally consists of a staple—such as white rice, brown rice, or barley rice—accompanied by a bowl of miso soup (ichiju) and a single side dish (issai), such as seasonal pickled or simmered vegetables. This arrangement typically comprises two or sometimes three bowls, occasionally supplemented by a small side dish (mukozuke or kobachi).
On the surface, this style of dining might appear simple, modest, or even meager. Yet, if one approaches ichiju-issai with deep dedication and care, it can attain a level of profundity and resonance akin to minimalist, conceptual art—much like a Zen enso (circle) painting or the “slash series” by Lucio Fontana.
This work, centered on the concept of ichiju-issai, emerged from my search for a way to create art related to food—a pursuit inspired in part by the fact that my father is a chef.
I handled nearly every stage of the process myself, from the kiku-neri (chrysanthemum-style) wedging of the clay to the hand-building and glazing.
By designing the piece to be wall-mounted, I aimed to detach it from the conventional notion of a meal or a set menu, transforming this traditional Japanese dining format into an object for viewing—an invitation to contemplate the culture of Japanese cuisine, or perhaps the very act of looking itself. I also envisioned that for those unfamiliar with Japanese culinary culture, the work might appear as an abstract form.
“The cooking of a society is a language in which it unconsciously translates its structure.”
