About the series
From the solo show To Go Towards The Light And Shine It On Our Night (Galerie Escougnou-Cetraro, Paris, 18 September – 31 October 2015). Following Le Temps d'après and A Singular Community (his solo show at Mori Yu Gallery in spring 2015), Maubert continues the journey he began three years earlier during his Villa Kujoyama residency, questioning — through a formal search expressing his new aesthetic world, his ethno-decentring, his initiation into the country's history and its myths — what constitutes a nation's identity.
The exhibition is articulated around three successive moments of experience: a first act tracing new configurations of the visible, sayable and thinkable (Studio 5 of Toei studios where Takashi Miike shot his Hara-Kiri remake, the blood-stained ceiling of Shōden-ji, Aokigahara forest, Yasukuni shrine, the persistent shimmer of fireflies at the Fusse festival); a second section of black surfaces and radiant Accidents sculptures evoking paper-screen windows of traditional Japanese homes; and finally Trinity, Maubert's film interrogating Kyoto's mythology — the Shingon triad of Mahāvairocana, Bishamonten and Seiju-kannon embodied by gaijin foreigners to Japan, echoing Chris Marker's Le Mystère Koumiko.
"It is always the same resistance: refusing to hand power over to things by giving them new aesthetic — and cathartic — forms. Emancipation begins when we question the opposition between looking and acting; that is how we can go towards the light and shine it on our night." — Isabelle Olivier
個展「To Go Towards The Light And Shine It On Our Night」(Galerie Escougnou-Cetraro、パリ、2015年9月18日–10月31日)より。
