About the series
From the series Le Temps d'après (Mori Yu Gallery, Kyoto, 2014).
With Le Temps d'après, Alexandre Ferdinand Maubert — filmmaker, visual artist and photographer whose work interrogates borders, territories and time — offers an intimate piece, a sculptural mise en abyme of his encounter with Japan. Inspired by the long journey of his stay there (almost two years following his Villa Kujoyama residency), this series is also a homage to Chris Marker, whose cinematographic works inspired the titles of these fragments of his dépays.
Like travel itself — made of waiting, dazzlement and remembering — these images are the result of patient work superimposing different strata of time. Multiple irradiations over eight months of journeys, then the photographic capture, then layers of colorisation. The sacred paths from Ginkaku-ji to Nanzen-ji, Mount Kurama, Fushimi Inari: the artist constructs a memory reinvented from image fragments and the entanglement of times they imply.
The series title is drawn from Jacques Rancière's Le Temps d'après, on Béla Tarr. — Isabelle Olivier
