Description

A Noh mask is a device through which a performer transforms their own body into another being by assuming the identity and emotions of another. After examining a Noh mask preserved at Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine, said to have been used by Zeami, the artist obtained permission from the shrine’s chief priest to create a utsushi (interpretive reproduction) using clay excavated from Asuka Village. Utsushi is not merely the reproduction of a form, but also an act of retracing the traces of the original maker’s creative gestures through one’s own body in the present. To trace the ridges and contours of the mask by hand is to re-experience the physical actions of another era and to receive another person’s sculptural expression into one’s own body. The work was fired in an anagama kiln in Tenkawa, allowing the local clay and flames to introduce unpredictable transformations. Just as a Noh mask serves as a device for assuming another identity, this work brings together traces of past acts of making, the passage of time accumulated in the land, and the context of religious belief within the ceramic body. By reconstructing bodily traces belonging to different times and places as a sculptural form in the present, the work explores the potential of the body as a “vessel” capable of receiving others.
