Description
A vessel formed on the potter’s wheel is crushed and deformed by hand, without any predetermined motif.
A vessel is defined by a membrane-like structure that separates its interior from the exterior. Even when its outer form is transformed and its function as a vessel is lost, its underlying structure, including its hollow interior and the continuity of its curved surfaces, remains intact.
Depending on the viewer’s knowledge and experience, these structural qualities can evoke different objects, such as biological organs or mechanical components, through the process of mitate (reinterpretation through resemblance).
The silver surface, reminiscent of metal, further blurs the perception of ceramics as a material.
By departing from the conventional forms and functions of vessels while retaining their underlying structure, the work attempts to generate sculptural forms and meanings that are not defined by existing functions or predetermined motifs.
