Press release

Ryuko Yonemura's solo exhibition TEKU・MAKU・MAYAKON has been extended until Sunday October 11. This is his first solo exhibition at the gallery. With the extension, some of the works on view have changed, and we look forward to your visit. "Tekumaku mayakon": this transformation spell, created by the genius Fujio Akatsuka for Himitsu no Akko-chan, is more than a girls' manga fantasy. It speaks to the essence of a "quiet transformation", in which one changes oneself by way of another. At the root of Ryuko Yonemura's forms and thinking lies the memory of childhood make-believe: the formative experience of making his own masks and props, "vessels for connecting with the world", to carve out a place of his own inside existing stories, and bringing them into a world shared with his friends. That experience leads, by way of the "modern myths" of the films and animation that shaped him, straight to his ceramic practice today. Yonemura says that "utsushi (copying) retraces the bodies of the past, the Noh mask turns the body into a vessel, and the mask connects oneself to a story". Just as a Noh mask makes the performer's individual outline recede and serves as "a device that turns the body into a vessel" for gods, buddhas and the foreign, he greatly expands the idea of the vessel, once confined to the tea bowl as a material tool, into a relational structure that receives stories, beliefs and other people themselves. Opening hours: 12:00 to 18:00. Closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and national holidays.
