Description
A work commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It was planned around the theme of a collaboration with an architect. The poem is by the architect Arata Isozaki; the music is by Takehisa Kosugi, Iimura’s collaborator since his debut work Kuzu (1962), who had succeeded John Cage in New York as music director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. It was shot with a computer-controlled moving camera set up beside the rock garden of Ryoan-ji.
In the slow movement of a tracking shot impossible by hand, time and space appear as one. The way various forms appear and vanish might be called a minimal road movie within a confined, miniature-garden-like time and space.
It was later also shown in the exhibition “MA: Return after 20 Years”, curated by Arata Isozaki (2000, The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts). Unusually for Iimura, it is a work made with a large-scale system on an ample budget.
