Press release
※ Due to popular demand, the exhibition period has been extended. MORI YU GALLERY presents Nobuhiro Hanaoka 'Careful discrepancy' and Rieko Yamamoto 'When you peep into the bottom,it is skin' from Saturday February 4 to Sunday March 12. 1F 'Half-made forms and offcuts lying around the studio, stacked magazines. Lumps of laundry scattered around the house. New communication, and miscommunication, born in the field of welfare. The assembling of elements such as forms, textures and things that emerge from a restricted living environment. Deliberate, random, or in between. I work on my daily production while thinking about "the act of sculpting" as an extension of life.' Nobuhiro Hanaoka Nobuhiro Hanaoka (born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1980) completed the graduate program at Kyoto Seika University in 2006. He makes and shows works mainly in wood carving. His distinctive works have attracted much attention, including receiving the 'Special Prize, 12th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art' in 2009 and showing in 「VOCA展2016 現代美術の展望 -新しい平面の作家たち」 (The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo) in 2016. In recent years his materials have expanded further into the artist's own daily life, as he uses more familiar materials (his own clothes, underwear and so on) and makes assemblages with existing materials. In the studio he carves wood, combines it with pieces of wood that were lying there, carves again, attaches for example clothes, books and so on, carves again, removes something again, and carves again, and attaches something again. Hanaoka has been carrying out work that makes ambiguous the meanings, values, narrativity and so on attached to unrelated things close at hand, by combining them. Hanaoka says, 'In the work as a whole, even when each element loses its surrounding context and meaning, I am moved by them as they continue to exist as forms.' In the creative process, Hanaoka creates exquisite differences between the materials, sets them against one another, and from there gives form to the work as a whole. Although the differences in quality that the materials themselves possess exist there, Hanaoka's works appear before our eyes as a continuous mass, without any sense of incongruity at all. 2F In the small space on the second floor, an artist other than the one in the main space on the first floor holds a small exhibition, as an experimental venue. This time we hold Rieko Yamamoto's solo exhibition 'When you peep into the bottom,it is skin'. This exhibition consists of paintings shown in the exhibition 「中身のパノラマ」 held in Osaka in 2015, which she has reworked, together with small three-dimensional works, drawings and so on. The paintings, painted with a dynamic touch and a distinctive power of composition, draw out the imagination of the viewer. Please be sure to come and see the exhibition, and bring your friends.
