Press release
'Lying on the ground and looking at the earth, the light of the sun grows stronger and weaker as the clouds drift, and the colors change. Unable to pin down where the reason for this comes from, I was straining my eyes in an unexpected direction.' Yu Shiozaki In Shiozaki's paintings, people, landscapes and so on are depicted with various brushstrokes together with beautiful colors. But the depicted images are not immediately clear; after a little while they begin to show themselves before the viewer, yet when one tries to capture them they suddenly flow away. And the images come toward us again and, while seeming about to vanish once more, gradually begin to show their true form. Shiozaki's paintings transform each time one looks at them. Is it the images that make them do so, or are many colors involved? The famous Dubuffet stated that there is no such thing as color, only matter that has color. 'There is as much elasticity as there are greens. One is drawn up into the sky, one has come down to the ground.' As Shiozaki says, it is precisely the accumulation of brushstrokes that gives birth to color, gives birth to images, and gives birth to elastic illusion. Something else, drifting, accompanies the images of Shiozaki that are depicted. When one suddenly gazes at the whole of Shiozaki's picture plane, a primal landscape like a vast, hazy sea comes into view. There, as something supporting a certain image, is something like waves, like the shadows of seawater. The Impressionists showed that shadow too is color. But Shiozaki's brushwork is free by comparison, draws along matter and seawater, and gives birth to color. And the colors drift... Shiozaki's distinctive brushwork hidden behind the colors... waves... it is precisely thereby that color can be color. And the vastness that Shiozaki's works hold will surely gradually begin to spread before the viewer's eyes. 'I want to respond even to sensations that make no sense, that have no means of conveying anything to anyone.' Please come and see the exhibition.
