Maeda left the graduate program in metallurgical engineering at Tohoku University before completing it, entered Kyoto City University of Arts, and studied sculpture there through to his master's degree. He then went to study in Berlin. There he has been making work into which he incorporates foods such as the pasta, bananas and bread he ate every day. A work in which he collected the blue stickers attached to the bananas he ate every day in Berlin and covered the entire surface of a carved wooden banana with those stickers. Or a work in which a thick slice of bread, with only the crust left, is dried, treated as a vessel and placed in a glass case of his own making: while holding a beautiful impression, like an offering to the 'gods', it brings us just a little smile. Making full use of wordplay, Maeda connects 'things' and 'matters' freely in every direction. He is truly like a renga poet or an alchemist. Sculptures made entirely by hand. You will surely be surprised by, and feel for, the new 'things' and 'matters' that Maeda creates. Please be sure to come and see his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in a long time.
