Ryuichiro Ando dyes a single thin cloth using the technique of wax-resist dyeing, and makes two-dimensional works whose theme is inner change through everyday experience. Since ancient times, the Japanese have called 'touching the heart deeply' 'shimiru' (to soak in), which expressed feeling on the skin, permeating, and touching the heart. Ando thinks that the inside of the vessel that is the body is filled with a water-like liquid that composes things such as emotions and energy. That liquid changes into various shapes as the emotions that arise day by day are transmitted to it, as if seeping into a single thin layer of skin. In the images expressing emotion there is a relationship between 'organic flying objects' and 'the horizon', and in unstable emotional states the 'flying object' is shown having lost the 'horizon'. 'The horizon' represents a state in which emotions and the like are stable, and is indispensable for 'something like an airplane' to fly 'level'. In his works so far, 'flying objects' have appeared having lost the 'horizon', falling from it, or turned vertical. In this solo exhibition, 'For the Purpose of Horizontal', the works are made mainly on the theme of the state before 'something like an airplane' gains the 'horizon' for level flight.
