Hitoko Urago went from Osaka to London and completed the master's course in painting at the graduate school of the Slade School of Fine Art, University of London. She also experienced residencies in South Africa and elsewhere, and returned to Japan. In addition to geometric abstraction, beautiful women appear in her paintings. She began the piano in early childhood. Perhaps because of that experience, the imagination of music spins out abstraction and draws out the world of figuration. But for her, figuration and abstraction are not a difference of quality; they may be like major and minor keys, with which the atmosphere of the same piece changes completely. As Urago herself says, this can also be seen from her words that both are her own portraits. Urago also did the make-up of supermodels and others. Her many experiences of touching the faces of women in Japan and abroad, and her exploration of femininity, which could be called research, have surely had an enormous influence on her painting. From Urago's paintings one receives the impression that elements of modeled sculpture lie hidden in them. The touch nurtured in the making of faces that is make-up, combined with what she learned from ART, has become a technique of her own, and draws us strongly. Urago's works will be shown as figurative works, abstract works, or works paired as figurative and abstract diptychs, and will surely let us hear a wonderful harmony.
