Yamamoto paints the various things around her, or things resembling them, with edgy brushstrokes. The strokes painted as if crossing from thing to thing are likewise sharp, and the paintings born of the composition of things and strokes come at us as light and full of movement, yet calm and very comfortable. And yet, why is it? At the same time, they give viewers an impression of being somehow unapproachable. Yamamoto's paintings, which behave as if pushing viewers away. Yamamoto lets her brush swim freely in every direction as if in response to her own bodily sensation, carves strokes into a mesh, and by drawing lines as if listing them, seems to dam up, with that net of lines, the images that are about to spill away from viewers. Yamamoto's paintings, built up through such complex composition, will surely show us a new world of painting with a mysterious presence. Please be sure to come and see Rieko Yamamoto's latest works.
