Press release

Rieko Yamamoto was born in Osaka in 1985 and this year completed the Master's Course in Painting (Oil Painting) at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts. She is a young artist attracting great attention, having been selected for 'VOCA' in 2010 and having received the Akiya Takahashi (Director, Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum) Prize at 'Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2011' in 2011. 'There is no floor plan from the start of painting; I keep moving the picture right to the end. What appears as motifs is always fragments of memory, my everyday life.' The tension born between ground and figure, that subtle balance, can easily collapse. But Yamamoto's paintings maintain a borderline sense of equilibrium, seeming about to collapse yet not collapsing. Her paintings seem soft yet are hard, seem hard yet are soft. The ground and figure of the picture plane resonate together as they move. Please be sure to come and see the latest works by Yamamoto, who is seeking new forms of expression.
