'To precipitate what is dissolved, I float a thin cellophane and extract the wrinkles that form on it. I put dried-out cellophane back in water and see what its contents were. A painting is something like a specimen.' Yu Shiozaki Shiozaki, featured this time, graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts and has painted slowly but steadily. The moment viewers see her paintings, they may find it hard to tell at once what is depicted. But after a while, they will notice that various times and places are depicted within a single painting. Something like the mouth of a cave that seems to be depicted in her paintings. A person walking alone. A forest, or the sea, or a cave. There, Shiozaki's own desire to go to some other world and her wish to stay here still are intertwined, and perhaps traces of the times and places she imagines are depicted. Wrinkles formed by floating a special cellophane on her imagination and memory. As something like that, the paintings are set down on the canvas. Though she attempts an approach to painting as a kind of experimental act, Shiozaki's paintings seem to show some influence of Nihonga. A fresh picture surface, as if gently floating cellophane on water and then gently scooping it up again. In Shiozaki's paintings there is somewhere a nostalgic scene that Japanese landscapes have. Please come and see her first solo exhibition at MORI YU GALLERY.
