Press release

'I want to lay bare the form of the omnipresent world by painting "pressure".' Countless lines are drawn in Shibata's paintings. These swarms of straight and curved lines appeal not only to the eye but also to the skin: they are, so to speak, visual-tactile. What Shibata paints is 'a certain world' that includes wind, the trembling of space, sound and so on, and that, although whether each of us individually can perceive it or not is subtle, certainly exists. Could we not think of it this way: against the 'pressure' of the 'world' rising up before Shibata, he paints while pushing back with his own 'pressure', as if resisting so as not to be crushed? As a result, a figure that has risen up like magma between the 'world' and Shibata stands up before us viewers, clothed in a peculiar perspective. Yet it is by no means heavy to the eye; is it not felt as 'pressure' only in the visual-tactile sense?
