くしのひら きパンクシ けむるラモーン ズをむすび もりとまつと うちあはせ Maeda left the graduate program in metallurgical engineering at Tohoku University before completing it, entered Kyoto City University of Arts, and studied sculpture there through to his master's degree. He then went to study in Berlin. There he has been making works into which he incorporates the pasta, bananas and bread he ate every day. For example, a work in which he collected the blue stickers attached to the bananas he ate day after day and covered the entire surface of a carved wooden banana with those stickers. Or a work in which a thick slice of bread, with only the crust left, is treated as a vessel, dried, and placed in a glass case of his own making: while holding an impression so beautiful it is like an offering to the 'gods', it brings us just a little smile. Making full use of wordplay, Maeda connects 'things' and 'things', 'matters' and 'matters', 'matters' and 'things' freely in every direction. He is truly like a renga poet or an alchemist. This time the main piece is a giant comb 3.8 m long. The comb is split clean in two. Like a butterflied comb, rather than a butterflied horse mackerel. A sculpture made entirely by hand. The inside of the split comb is breadcrumbs. You will surely be surprised by, and feel for, the new 'matters' and 'things' that Maeda creates.
